Daniel said,
“May the name of God be blessed
forever and ever,
For wisdom and power belong to Him.
It is He who changes the times and the periods;
He removes kings and appoints
kings;
He gives wisdom to wise men,
And knowledge to people of
understanding.”
Daniel 2:20-21 New American Standard
Bible (NASB)
In this chapter, King
Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon
had a dream, but demanded that his wise men tell him what the dream was before
they interpreted it. None could so he declared all the wise men were to be put
to death. Daniel and his friends appealed to God (through prayer and fasting)
and God told them what the dream was and what it meant, which Daniel then told to
the king and they were spared. These verses were Daniel’s response to receiving
the answer from God, and he continued by praising God for His knowledge, wisdom
and love. Daniel knew that God was in control. God knew what the dream was (He
actually gave the dream to the king), and what it meant. He is also the one who
allowed the king to gain the throne, rule and conquer Israel. It was
all part of God’s plan, and He has the power to give or remove kings,
governors, rulers, etc. as He sees fit. At this time, Babylon was the greatest nation, and
Nebuchadnezzar the greatest king, but even he and his reign are in subjection
to God as we’ll see next Tuesday. God gives leaders power, but He can also take
it away. Just because it does not happen by supernatural force, as in the case
of Nebuchadnezzar, does not mean it wasn’t God. It can happen through voting,
war or even death. God is in control and He knows what is best. We need to
trust that He is sovereign, even over the election, and that He is working for
the ultimate good of humanity through His divine plan. We can rest in the
knowledge that He is good, loving and just.
When worry over the course of
politics or society weighs you down, remember God has a plan. He is not blind
or indifferent. He is working; we just can’t see it yet. Ask Him to give you
the faith to trust in Him and His plan, and the patience to endure whatever
befalls.
