Set
your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. For you have died and your life
is hidden with Christ in God.
Colossians 3:2-3 New American Standard Bible (NASB)
I have heard it said that “you
are what you think.” What we think about shapes our being, not only mentally
but also physically. The mind and body are connected and intertwined. What we
think about also affects our emotions, setting our mood and attitude. It can
also affect us spiritually, if our thoughts are set on worldly, even ungodly,
things it can have a negative affect on the rest of our being. So what should we
think about? The things above, literally things pertaining to Christ. We are to
think of what is godly, not worldly. We should be heavenly minded. Why? Because
we have died to the world and are hidden with Christ. We are no longer citizens
of this world but only pilgrims traveling through this world until we reach our
true home. We are not of this world and so we should not be consumed with this
world. Of course we need to pay attention to what is around us, and do our best
to help those here, but we need to remember Whose we are and where we belong. If
we think of God, we will become like God, but if we think of worldly things, we
will become worldly. There is no middle ground. We choose what we think about,
and so we choose what we become. What do you think about? Where is your mind
set? What are you causing yourself to become?
