Without consultation, plans are frustrated,
But with many counselors they succeed.
But with many counselors they succeed.
Proverbs 15:22 New American Standard
Bible (NASB)
We need advice, and a lot of
it. I won’t say that it is possible to have too much advice, if it is godly
advice, but going to people who do not give wise advice will lead to ruin. We
need counsel in everything but we should be careful where we get it. It is
folly to think that we have all the wisdom we need on our own, but it is also
folly to get advice from fools. We need humility to be wise, and part of that
is asking for counsel and advice. One only needs to look at the kings of Israel to see
this play out. Some kings did well because they heeded the advice of wise
counselors. Some watched their country fall to ruin because they either
wouldn’t listen to advice, or listened to ungodly counselors. The first place
we should go for advice is God and the Bible, and we should go there regularly,
even if we don’t have a dilemma to solve. That way we will have a store of
godly advice already imbedded in us. Next, we should find godly counselors to
whom we can go when we do have a dilemma and need counsel, and we cannot have
too many of these “in our pockets” to call in time of need. I have several whom
I call depending on the need, some for advice in marriage, others for advice in
parenting, and all for advice in godliness in general. I am very grateful for
those I have in my corner. We don’t have to have some plan we are building or
devising to need advice. Life is one big plan of glorifying God, and if we do
not have the counsel we need, it will be frustrating. Parenting and marriage
are two huge “plans” for which we cannot have too much godly advice. Are you
frustrated? What plans do you have? Do you have godly counselors to whom you
can go for wise advice? If not, ask God to guide you to people who can help
direct you.
