Devotions: The Right Time

There is an appointed time for everything. And there is a time for every event under heaven—
Ecclesiastes 3:1 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

There is a time for everything, but not all at once, and not always. Nothing lasts for ever, nor should it. Childhood does not last forever, or else we would never grow up, mature and experience so many things in life. Pregnancy does not last forever (thank goodness!) or we would never have babies who would grow up into adults. There is an appointed time for everything that happens, an appropriate time. Unfortunately, sometimes we push, we try for things too soon; like sex outside of marriage, or getting involved in relationships too soon. Sex and relationships are not bad if they happen in the context God designed for them, if we wait for His appropriate timing, but if we don’t we will experience the consequences of our impatience. Some friendships are not meant to last forever. Sometimes those people are there with us for a time, but then we have to move on for whatever reason. Some jobs or activities only last for a time or season, then we need to move on. The way that we know when the appropriate time is for something is to seek God’s direction. Some things are made clear in the Bible (like sex and marriage), but others differ based on each person. God knows everything, past, present and future. He also knows what is best for He made us. We need to seek His guidance on the timing of our lives. Sometimes we have to give up our dreams because now is not the time, but God knows when. Abraham was impatient and tried to make the promise happen in his timing, which resulted in a lot of pain for his family for centuries to come. He should have waited for God’s timing, for God to fulfill the promise He made. The trick to waiting on God’s timing is trust. Do you trust that God is good and in control? Do you trust Him to do what is best for you? If so, ask for His direction. If you don’t trust Him, ask Him to grow that trust in you. He is faithful and completely trustworthy.
