For
God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and
discipline.
2 Timothy 1:7 New American Standard
Bible (NASB)
In other versions, timidity
is translated as fear. It seems like there is so much to be afraid of, to worry
about, these days. BUT fear is not of God. Power, love and discipline (or sound
judgment) are, but not fear. Fear is from the enemy, who comes to steal, kill,
and destroy. That is what fear does. It robs us of peace. It kills our
confidence. It destroys our relationships. It is interesting to me that the
references for the word spirit link
to verses about the peace God has given us (John 14:27) and that we are not
given a spirit of slavery leading to fear but one of adoption as children of
God (Romans 8:15). That is the Spirit God has given us; peace and adoption, not
slavery and fear. When we are tempted to be afraid and worried, remember that
God is in control. He has already defeated satan and death. He has power over them both, and everything
else. Remember that we are loved.
That is why we are adopted, because He loved us so much He sacrificed His Son
so that we could be with Him. Remember we have the ability of sound judgment and discipline. We don’t
have to be controlled by fearful, anxious thoughts. We don’t have to listen to
them. We can choose to trust God, to think about whatever is pure and holy. We
have the power to do this because of Christ’s work and His Spirit in us.
Remember the Spirit that is in you. Remember what you have because of that, and
do not be afraid.
