Devotions: The Greatest Duty

Let all that you do be done in love.
1 Corinthians 16:14 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

A fifth, and I believe overarching, command after the four discussed yesterday is to do everything in love. Taking a stand, being on guard, acting like men, and being strong should all be done in the context of love, for God and others. The entire Law can be summarized in “Love God and love others” so love should be the filter we use in daily life. This is not talking about the fluffy, blind-acceptance, feeling kind of love the world plays up. This is God’s kind of love, which is vastly deeper and stronger. It is unconditional and completely unselfish. Agape is the greatest form of love which God bestows on us. It does what is best for others to the extent of sacrificing self. It is the kind of love that sent Jesus to the cross. No matter what we do, it should be done in love. We should never put ourselves first. That does not mean that we cannot do anything we enjoy, but it should not be selfish and it should not be done at the expense of others. Our strength should be loving and not arrogant. Our alertness should be ready to fight for others, and for the Gospel, not to protect our own rights. Our stands should be for the cause of Christ, not our own personal agendas. Our manliness should be loving and godly, not egotistical. Begin your day asking God to help you love in every action. Ask Him to show you how to do that. Be intentional about loving everyone you come in contact with, including your Savior.
