[Love]
bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
1 Corinthians 13:7 New American Standard Bible (NASB)
This verse comes toward the
end of the famous “love chapter” in Corinthians. Love bears all things; it does
not crumble or break. It does not give up. Love believes all things or rather
is ever ready to believe the best of every person. Love gives the benefit of
the doubt and focuses on the positive rather than the negative. Love hopes all
things; in every circumstance is ready to hope for the best. It doesn’t despair
or think it’s hopeless or impossible. Love endures all things without
weakening. Our feelings may wax and wane, we may become tired and overwhelmed,
but love doesn’t grow cold or give up. When we feel a weakening of “love” it is
really our emotions that are fading, not love itself. Love is an action, a
choice, not a feeling. We can love people without feeling affection for them by
choosing to put them first, choosing to serve them rather than serving
ourselves. This verse is a test for whether we are truly loving a person or
not. If we give up, we are not loving them. If we believe the worst or lose
hope, we are not acting in love. If we are not willing to endure, for better or
worse, that is not love. Feelings come and go, but love does not. It’s a choice
we make whether we will love a person or not. What will you choose today?
