Moreover,
I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove
the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.
Ezekiel 36:26 New American Standard
Bible (NASB)
After Israel was
exiled for their sin, God encouraged them with promises of renewal and
restoration. He promised to cleanse them from their sin and make them new, to
gather them back to their land and to Himself. This reference of the flesh is
not referring to the old sinful nature, but of the consistency of the heart.
The New Living Translation says that He will take away their stubborn, stony
hearts and give them tender, responsive hearts instead. We are all born
spiritually dead, unaware of and separated from God. Only He can give us
spiritual life and revive our hearts. This happens to every believer when they
give their lives to Him. That is where our transformation begins, with a new
heart in which God resides. Then He proceeds with the process of
sanctification, making us more like Him. That is why we are able to love Him,
because He has given us new, loving hearts in place of our dead, stony hearts.
What is the state of your heart? Is it alive and tender or dead and stony?
Maybe your heart has been renewed, but you have slowly been slipping back to stone.
Ask God to renew you again, to revive your heart. Only He can do it, and He is
longing to.
