“For
I, the Lord, do not change; therefore
you, O sons of Jacob, are not consumed. From the days of your fathers you have turned aside from
My statutes and have not kept them. Return to Me, and I will return to
you,” says the Lord of hosts.
Malachi 3:6-7 New American Standard
Bible (NASB)
God does not change. The God
of the Old Testament is still the God of the New Testament. He is the same. His
laws have not changed, His Word has not changed, His love and justice have not
changed. Many think that He changed between the Testaments, but it was only His
focus brought on by the new covenant. Before Christ, people had to make
sacrifices to atone for their sins, but Jesus took care of that once for all. After
Jesus came, the focus was made on man’s hearts rather than on his actions alone.
We still need to obey, but we are not saved by obedience. God always cared
about people’s hearts, but He did not make it so obvious before. People needed
to realize how desperately they needed a Savior, how black their hearts really were,
before they could begin to focus on changing their hearts. God has always had
mercy and grace, that is why all of mankind was not wiped out (on multiple
occasions). His love and grace are evident throughout scripture. That is why Israel was not consumed,
because of God’s mercy. Even though they turned away from Him repeatedly, He
always welcomed them when they returned. The same is true today. He does not
change. He always loves us. He will always forgive us when we repent. Will you
return to Him?
