in
all things show yourself to be an example of good deeds, with
purity in doctrine, dignified,
sound in speech which is beyond reproach, so that the opponent will be put
to shame, having nothing bad to say about us.
Titus 2:7-8 New American Standard
Bible (NASB)
This is an exhortation
specifically for young men, but I believe it applies to everyone. We need to
lead by example, which means that the example we set should be one worth
following. We need to do good deeds. Our actions need to be worthwhile and
righteous. Nothing in what we do should reflect selfishness or sin. Our doctrine,
that is our teachings or what we believe, should be pure, not compromised with
the world’s beliefs or teachings. It should be wholly and solely based on the
Word of God. We need to be dignified, that is having a character that is
honorable or worthy of respect. What we say needs to be grounded in the truth
of God’s word and not full of our own ideas or persuasive speech. We need to
confront people with the truth, not arguments, so that they are fighting with
God’s words and not ours. What we say and how we say it should also be beyond
reproach. It needs to be respectful, humble, and truthful. Nothing in what we
say or do should give anyone grounds for condemning us. That does not mean that
people won’t have issue with what we say, but if it is God’s word then they are
offended by the truth and not by us. They should not be offended by our manners
or attitudes. Above all we need to live in a way that no one could truthfully
say anything bad about us, and if someone did no one would believe it. What
kind of example are you setting? Is it one worth following?
