Devotions: Rejected Purpose

But the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected God’s purpose for themselves, not having been baptized by John.
Luke 7:30 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

Jesus had just finished talking to John the Baptist’s disciples and talking about John, saying that he was greater than all, but the least in the Kingdom of God would be even greater. The common people and those who were considered “sinners” (i.e. tax collectors, prostitutes, etc.) agreed and acknowledged God’s justice because they had been baptized by John. The Pharisees and lawyers, however, did not. This baptism of John was one of repentance, one which acknowledged one’s sin and vowed to turn away from it. The Pharisees and teachers of the law would not acknowledge that they had sin needing repentance. They maintained their position of self righteousness and therefore refused not only their Savior, but also their purpose in life. How tragic, that these men who could possibly have been great evangelists like Paul, lost that opportunity because of their own pride and hard heartedness. Do not be like these men. Don’t lose God’s purpose for you by rejecting your need for a Savior. Ask God for a soft and humble heart that is willing to admit its need for Him and repent.
