Listen to counsel and accept discipline,
That you may be wise the rest of your days.
That you may be wise the rest of your days.
Proverbs 19:20 New American Standard
Bible (NASB)
The New Living Translation of this verse
says to “get all the advice and instruction you can.” This is active. We should
not be passive about gaining wisdom. How do we do that? We seek advice from
godly people, we willingly listen to counsel and wisdom, we obey what is said,
we learn from being disciplined. Anyone with children can tell when a child
“accepts discipline” and when they don’t, and the result follows suit. If they
accept it, they won’t make the same mistake again, but if they don’t, it is
sure to be repeated, sometimes 5 minutes later. That is what the Bible calls
foolish, it can also be called rebellious. The Bible also says that the way of
a fool is right in his own eyes, but the wise listen to counsel. Many people
want to be wise, but few are humble enough to get there, or willing to put out
enough effort to seek it. Few are willing to listen and obey, preferring to go
their own way, choosing rebellion over wisdom. If you want to be wise, you
first need to humble, you need to listen, you need to accept discipline. Are
you willing to do that?
