Let me hear Your lovingkindness in the
morning;
For I trust in You;
Teach me the way in which I should walk;
For to You I lift up my soul.
For I trust in You;
Teach me the way in which I should walk;
For to You I lift up my soul.
Psalm 143:8 New American Standard
Bible (NASB)
This is a psalm of
deliverance and guidance written by David. He is beseeching God to deliver him
from his enemies, but also to give him guidance in what he should do and how he
should act. David is obviously distraught over the issue, whatever it is, and
is seeking God’s comfort. To hear God’s lovingkindness in the morning has many
connotations. First, it is important to look for God’s compassion and love in
everything He says, even and especially in discipline and rebuke. Second, it is
important that our waking thoughts be of God, especially His love and mercy,
for that will change the course of our day. Third, trials and suffering are
like night, a time of darkness, solitude, even fear, but dawn is the breaking
point when those circumstances turn around. I believe David is also looking for
that turning point, asking God to bring that change of circumstances to relieve
his soul. David looks to all of this because he trusts God. He doesn’t trust
God because of it, but rather the opposite, he looks for it because he knows it
will be there. This verse is a transition in the psalm where David turns from
petitions of deliverance to guidance. This request is one we should utter every
day of our lives, not just when we are in trouble. We should continually seek
God’s ways, to learn from Him and imitate Him, so that we can walk as He does.
He is the One we have given our souls to (in salvation) so we should look to
Him for guidance. It doesn’t do much good to say we have given our hearts to
God if we refuse to follow Him and walk as He does. We need to be true to our
word and our faith, we need to walk where we have put our hearts. Look for
God’s lovingkindness, especially at dawn, and give Him your soul so that you
may walk in His ways.
