Devotions: Fear and Wisdom

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,
And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
Proverbs 9:10 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

This fear of God is not one of fright, but a reverential awe and respect. It is an attitude which makes one worship God and view Him as most worthy and most wise. That is why it is the beginning of wisdom. If we view God this way, we will pay attention to what He says and obey Him. True wisdom only comes from Him so we must seek Him and respect Him enough to listen to what He says and follow it. It is through knowing Him that we gain that wisdom and a discerning mind and heart to use it. If we don’t know Him, we won’t understand or respect Him, therefore the wisdom He has will do us no good. Many people read the Bible who do not respect God. What they read does them no good because they do not hold it as absolute truth and so do not obey it. It doesn’t transform their minds and hearts. We have to have an intimate, personal knowledge of God and a reverential fear of Him in order to gain His wisdom and have it benefit us. Do you fear God? Do you know Him personally and intimately? What do you need to do to change that?
