Devotions: Rich in Mercy

But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),
Ephesians 2:4-5 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

This is the Gospel in two verses! We all started life lost, sinful, spiritually dead, but because of God’s great love for us He had mercy on us. He chose to make a way for us to rise above our sins in order to know and have a relationship with Him. That is through Jesus, His only Son, Who died to pay the debt we owed. God is willing to overlook, to forgive our debt if we will believe in His Son, accept His sacrifice for our sin, and submit our lives to Him. This is mercy, forgiving a debt we owe. But not only has He forgiven our debt, He has also given us new life, vibrant spiritual life which is impossible with sin-filled hearts. We were dead, but now we can have life, a free gift we could never deserve. That is grace. That is why Jesus came to earth. That is why we celebrate Christmas. We are celebrating His great love for us which is expressed in His sacrifice for us. Has His love been made real to you? Have you grasped the deepest meaning of Christmas?
