Devotions: Rooted in Christ

Therefore as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, having been firmly rooted and now being built up in Him and established in your faith, just as you were instructed, and overflowing with gratitude.
Colossians 2:6-7 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

If we believe Jesus is the Son of God who died for our sins and receive Him as our Lord (submit our lives to Him) then we should spend the rest of our lives striving to be like Him. In the same way that trees are planted and established and then built up and continue to grow, so we are planted and rooted in Jesus when we receive salvation and should continue to grow as one of His trees, or better, as a branch on His tree, like the root from which we are growing. We need to follow the instructions of our faith (found in the Bible) so that we can be built up and established. We cannot do that if we are not living like Him, walking in Him. We cannot walk in the world and expect to grow like Christ. It won’t happen. We need to be immersed/planted in Him so that we can grow like Him. We need to follow His directions for life. We should also be overflowing with gratitude, because He didn’t have to save us. We didn’t deserve it. He could have left us to pay the penalty for our sins, but He didn’t. He loved us too much to let us perish, but He also loves us too much to let us live in sin and the world. He will change us and help us grow into Him if we will let Him. That is walking in Christ, allowing Him to mold our lives. We have so much to be thankful for. Even if His love and salvation is all we have, that is more than we deserve and greater than everything else put together. Walk in Him and walk in gratitude. Allow Him to fill your life with His love and ways so that you can be filled with gratitude.
