Devotions: Mutual Help

For if either of them falls, the one will lift up his companion. But woe to the one who falls when there is not another to lift him up.
Ecclesiastes 4:10 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

Many people, especially Americans it seems, try to do life on their own. Pride and distrust are the most common reasons, but neither are healthy or godly. We were created to need each other, to help each other. That is a picture of our relationship with God. We all need God to survive, and our need for each other mirrors that and shows the world a part of what God is like. Many say they don’t need help, they can do it alone, are better off alone. Some feel they are lesser individuals if they accept help. None of these are true though. We all need help, and it takes greater strength to accept help than it does to remain prideful and isolated. We all fall some time. We all experience seasons of difficulty. Those times are much easier to bear if we have someone we can trust to help us through them, than if we try to do it alone. If a person were to fall into a pit out of which they could not climb on their own, they would be stuck if they had no friend to help. Often sin is like that. We need others to keep us accountable. If we don’t eventually anything becomes acceptable and we fall into worse and worse sin, and are then unable to pull ourselves out of it. Do you have someone to help you in difficult times, someone to keep you accountable and on the right path?

  1. Beautifully written and so very true.
I know people in my own life who believe they need no-one, that they were created to be a loner and are not very social, therefore, they believe they do better by themselves.
My, they are missing a great promise from God.
In my own life,I have been blessed in many ways because of the love others have showered upon me, as well as times when I needed correction and held accountable.
Thank you for this thought provoking posting.

    God bless you~
