O my God,
incline Your ear and hear! Open Your eyes and see our desolations and the city
which is called by Your name; for we are not presenting our supplications
before You on account of any merits of our own, but on account of Your great
compassion. O Lord, hear! O Lord, forgive! O
Lord, listen and take action! For Your own sake, O my God, do not delay,
because Your city and Your people are called by Your name.
Daniel
9:18-19 New American Standard
Bible (NASB)
This is the end
of Daniel’s prayer for God to restore Israel . It is important to note
that Daniel is not asking because of anything they deserve or because of his
own piety, but because of God’s compassion. That is the basis for his request.
He knows the nature of our God. He knows the greatness of His compassion. He
also knows that there is no way anyone could possibly earn or deserve it. It is
all based on God’s love and grace. When asking God for something, are you
inclined to try to convince God you deserve it somehow, or to ask based on how
much you think you deserve it? Or do you avoid asking God because you know you
don’t deserve it? Both are faulty. The Bible is clear that we do not deserve
anything, nor can we earn it, but it is also clear that God has compassion on
whom He chooses based on His goodwill. When you come to God, don’t come with an
attitude of entitlement, but also don’t be afraid. He is a good Father who
knows how to give good gifts. Instead of having confidence in yourself, have
confidence in God and His love for you!
