Devotions: Promised Compassion

“They will not hunger or thirst, Nor will the scorching heat or sun strike them down; For He who has compassion on them will lead them
And will guide them to springs of water…Shout for joy, O heavens! And rejoice, O earth! Break forth into joyful shouting, O mountains!
For the Lord has comforted His people And will have compassion on His afflicted…Can a woman forget her nursing child
And have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, but I will not forget you. Behold, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands; Your walls are continually before Me.”
Isaiah 49:10, 13, 15-16 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

This is a beautiful chapter on the promise of God’s salvation and restoration! He promises to be the guide and guardian, the provider and comforter for His people. At that, even the earth will break forth in songs of joy! Why does He make these promises? Why does He have compassion on people who have continually turned away from Him? Because He is more compassionate than a nursing mother. His love for us is greater than the most affectionate mother’s on earth! It is so extensive and so permanent that He has literally tattooed us on His hands so that He is constantly reminded of us! Our sorrows and tears are not overlooked or forgotten. He feels them even more than we do. He will erase all of those hurts and grief. He will make it as though they had never been. His wrath and justice may be shockingly great at times, but His love, compassion and grace are infinitely greater! Do not lose hope! His love for you will not fail! He has promised to restore you. Turn to Him, trust in His goodness, submit to Him and wait for His love.
