Devotions: The Compassionate Redeemer

“For the Lord has called you, Like a wife forsaken and grieved in spirit, Even like a wife of one’s youth when she is rejected,” Says your God. “For a brief moment I forsook you, But with great compassion I will gather you. In an outburst of anger I hid My face from you for a moment, But with everlasting lovingkindness I will have compassion on you,” Says the Lord your Redeemer...”For the mountains may be removed and the hills may shake, But My lovingkindness will not be removed from you, And My covenant of peace will not be shaken,”
Says the Lord who has compassion on you.
Isaiah 54:6-8, 10 NASB

This is such a beautiful chapter! For though the Israelites had sinned, committed horrible atrocities and turned away from the Lord God repeatedly, He was still faithful and compassionate. He is still the Redeemer, then and now. We may feel like a spouse who has been abandoned, because our sin has separated us from God, or because we are going through difficult circumstances, but God is still our Redeemer. He still has compassion. This is not the end! The things of this life are temporary, but if we believe in Jesus as our Lord and Savior we will be redeemed, we will be restored, we will experience His compassion. That is a promise that will never be broken. It may not happen on this earth, but it will happen in the life to come. His love is everlasting; it far outstretches His anger and the circumstances of this life. He has made a covenant with us that will not be changed. If you are feeling distant from God, forsaken, abandoned, forlorn, remember His love does not end, but His anger does. This life is temporary, His compassion is not. Turn to your Redeemer! Trust in Him and wait for Him to gather you to His arms!
