Devotions: The Truth of Compassion

The Lord is compassionate and gracious,
Slow to anger and abounding in lovingkindness.
Psalm 103:8 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

This verse is describing God’s character, Who He is. He is compassionate and gracious. Compassion and grace are part of His very nature, and He cannot be otherwise. This means that He is slow to anger. He doesn’t have a hot temper, or fly off the handle. He is not unjust in His anger. It also means that He abounds in lovingkindness. Lovingkindness is a complicated word, and difficult to translate fully from the Hebrew, but it brings connotations of mercy, love, kindness, and favor. God abounds in those qualities. He expresses them abundantly, more than we need or deserve. When you feel the weight of sin or the grief of suffering, remember it won’t last forever. Your God abundantly, lavishly shows mercy, love, kindness and favor to those who love Him. You may not always feel it, but it is always true. Cling to that truth and let it see you to the fulfillment of it.
