Devotions: Saving Compassion

Then I called upon the name of the Lord:
“O Lord, I beseech You, save my life!”
Gracious is the Lord, and righteous;
Yes, our God is compassionate.
The Lord preserves the simple;
I was brought low, and He saved me.
Psalm 116:4-6 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

This psalm praises God for deliverance from death. It begins with a declaration of love for God and praise for His goodness. The psalmist wants to remind his readers of God’s unchanging goodness and love even though the psalmist came near to death. He then talks about his distress and cry for help, with praises of God’s character and help throughout. He was in trouble, he called on God, and God saved him. God saved him because He (God) is compassionate. He doesn’t have to save or help us but He does because of His love for us. His compassion drives His relationship with us. What can we give Him in return? We can only offer what we have, and that is what He has given us. We can only give Him ourselves, offer our lives as a sacrifice in worship of His greatness, love and mercy. Are you willing to do that? Is His compassion and deliverance worth the sacrifice?
