Devotions: The Power of Confession

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
1 John 1:9 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

Confessing sin is never easy. It requires that we admit that we were wrong. Many don’t confess to God because they don’t want to admit that what they enjoy is something they shouldn’t do. Confession requires acting on conviction and it demands repentance. Some feel as if they don’t deserve to be forgiven (which we don’t) and are afraid that they won’t get it, or think they need to punish themselves. But we should never be afraid of coming to God for confession. He loves us so deeply He made it possible for us to be forgiven, and He is willing to forgive us freely and repeatedly. He will faithfully forgive us every time we confess. He is also righteous, or just, to forgive us. Forgiving our sin is within His divine nature and law. It is right and just for Him to do so. He isn’t ignoring, bending or even breaking any laws in order to forgive us. He can do it justly because the blood of Jesus paid the penalty for that sin. He won’t leave us there though. After He forgives our sin He will cleanse us from it. He will make us pure and holy. Forgiveness doesn’t just cross that sin out. It completely removes it from us. We are no longer defiled by it. We have every reason to confess our sin to Him! What are you waiting for?
