Devotions: Worthy of God

so that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him  in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God.

Colossians 1:10 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

How do we please God? How can we walk in a way that is worthy of Him? Part of that is by bearing godly fruit and getting to know God more, developing that relationship with Him. But how do we do that? The previous verse tells us: by being filled with the full knowledge of His will in spiritual wisdom and understanding. This is a special kind of wisdom and knowledge that only comes from God. It is not enough to simply know about God or study the Bible. We have to have a deep relationship with Him, the kind where we gain God Himself. We have to do and want to do His will, what He wants instead of what we want. The only human truly worthy of God is Christ. So in order to walk in a worthy manner or please Him we must be like Christ. We must seek to be like Him, and to do that we must seek Him. If we do that then we will bear godly fruit and increase in knowledge of Him. It is one of those things which builds on itself. If we seek God wholeheartedly, with the intention of being like Him, then we will be worthy of God and we will please Him. That is what He wants; a deep, abiding relationship with us. He wants us!
