Devotions: The Path to Freedom

So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, “If you continue in My word, then  you are truly disciples of Mine; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.”

John 8:31-32 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

Freedom. It is something all peoples have sought, collectively and individually. Some think they gain it only to discover that they have been trapped once more. True freedom comes from truth. But it is not any truth, it is the truth of Christ, of who He is and what He has done and it supersedes all others. Everything we do, see and believe should be based on that truth. So how do we gain this truth which frees us? By becoming His disciples. We must be true disciples of Christ in order to know His truth. Many seek truth, wisdom and knowledge. But what they gain will not free them unless they find it in Christ. The world’s truth and knowledge can only take a person so far, and can be in itself a snare, a trap. We must be true disciples of Christ to gain real, freeing truth. And the way we become His disciples is to continue in His word. It is not enough to simply read the Bible or go to church. We must live in His word, His commands. What He says must dictate every part of our lives. That is what it means by “continue,” to stay in it, be immersed in it, continually. We can’t gain His truth by reading the Bible or going to church once in a while any more than we can gain a college education by occasionally reading text books or attending lectures. We have to be a part of it, wholly devoted to that which we seek. It has to penetrate the very core of our being. Then we will be His disciples, then we will have the truth, and we will be free!
