Devotions: The Blessings of Hunger

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

Matthew 5:6 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

This righteousness is of course God’s righteousness. There is a righteousness not of God but of ourselves, but it is empty and of no worth to God. Those who hunger and thirst (that is seek and desire) for God’s righteousness are blessed because they will be satisfied. The point here is that an appetite for God’s righteousness is the only appetite that will ever be truly satisfied. Desiring anything else will leave us wanting more, still hungry and unquenched. In seeking this righteousness we need to seek God Himself. He offers mercy and grace freely to any who will come. We don’t have to pay anything, nor could anything we offer be enough. All we can do is come and receive. He is the Life-giving Water and the Bread of Life. We must come and seek and desire Him, and we will be fed and quenched and fully satisfied. We must abide in Him. Seek Christ. Hunger and thirst for His righteousness and be blessed!

How true. In this world today people seem to turn to everything but God to get the satisfaction or contentment they seek, but to no avail. A bigger house, a better job, a more beautiful spouse, a rush from doing drugs or something with a lot of adrenaline. If they are what we long for, these things fulfill our desires for just a speck of time in the length of eternity. Christ alone can give us living water and fulfill our longings permanently.
