Devotions: The Blessing of Purity

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
Matthew 5:8 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

Reading through the Old Testament (especially Leviticus) it is clear how important purity is to God. Purity entails so much more than “waiting for marriage” it is a state of the heart. It is refraining from anything ungodly in any respect; thoughts, actions, words etc. Psalm 24 says that only those who are pure of heart, who have clean hands and have not turned to anything corrupt in any way may ascend to God’s holy place. (This refers to seeking His presence here on earth, but also eternity in heaven.) Holiness is purity. It is an absence of anything sinful or disobedient. In order to fully approach God, we need to be holy and pure. Of course we are sinful humans and could never make ourselves pure in any way, like trying to wash sheets in a mud puddle. But God can cleanse us. He can make us pure. We need to seek Him, ask Him to purify us and wash us clean, and then we need to strive to follow Him, to live pure, holy lives. Then we will see God, not through the muddy tint of the world, but as He is in all purity and holiness. Then we may come to Him, knowing that He will hear our prayers. Seek true purity and holiness and be blessed!
