Devotions: Blessings from Trust in God Alone

How blessed is the man who has made the Lord his trust,
And has not turned to the proud, nor to those who lapse into falsehood.

Psalm 40:4 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

Happy and prosperous are those who trust or take refuge in God. God is the only One totally trustworthy, the only One who will not fail, the only One in whom we can find complete security. That is why we are happy and prosperous if we trust in Him. If we trust in people that way, we will be disappointed and let down. If we don’t fully trust God we will be plagued with anxiety and fear. If we try to maintain control of our lives in any way we will lack peace because we will worry about that being taken away. But if we trust in the Lord we have complete assurance that He will take care of everything. We can rely on Him implicitly. Life may not go as we want, but it will go as He plans and that is the best for us. We are also blessed if we do not trust in those who are arrogant or liars. This reminds me of Isaiah, who talks about the downfall of Israel because they trusted in Egypt, in armed forces and chariots. God handed them over to their oppressors because they trusted in man rather than in God. They trusted the boast of Egypt’s might more than the strength and promise of God. How often do we do that? How often do we trust what some “wise” person says rather than seeking God’s counsel for our lives? Even if that person is right, we should go to God first. And if we reject God’s wisdom for the counsel of a person we will quickly go astray. We must rely on God's wisdom above all. The last part seems obvious enough; happy are those who do not trust liars. Logically, one would assume that a liar is untrustworthy, but how often do we put our trust in politicians, who are known to say anything for a vote? Maybe we don't trust them specifically, but we hope for the change we want to happen through them. We need to trust in God alone. We need to put our hope in Him. Then, we will be happy and prosper because He will guide our steps and we will be free from worry and disappointment. Trust in God alone and be blessed!
