I was
glad when they said to me,
“Let us go to the house of the Lord.”
“Let us go to the house of the Lord.”
Psalm 122:1 New American Standard Bible (NASB)
The house of the
Lord. This was written by David, the king after God’s heart, who was so
passionate about God’s presence that he took great pains to bring the Ark of the
covenant to Jerusalem
and hoped to build a permanent temple for God’s dwelling. He was so excited
about the Ark
finally “coming home” that he danced his clothes off. Back then, God dwelt near the Ark, not in people's hearts. It makes sense, given
this history, that David would be glad at an invitation to meet with God. David
loved being with God because of who God is. He is a wonderful Father, loving
Creator, merciful Judge, gracious Healer, bountiful Provider. David gained this
love for God by spending time with God, learning who He is. It was through
constant communion that David grew to have that passion for God. He learned to love
God’s presence more than anything. Do you share that passion for God’s
presence? Do you share his excitement for meeting with God? Is God’s house a
place you delight to be? Take some time to spend with God, not asking for what
you want, but getting to know Him, reading His word, listening to Him. Ask Him
to give you that joy in His house and presence. Make church a time of delight.
